In this project we were given about 45 pieces of hardware material such as screws, nails, washers, and other small bits of hardware that represented fossils. We had to imagine them as species. We had to classify them into categories (family, genus, spices) give them Latin names, explain in a story how they evolved to one another, and present our findings to our class. We had to decide how one bit evolved from another, and which hardware pieces were of the same species. CONTENT: Speciation: the formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution Family: is a group of people affiliated either by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence Genus: a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family, and is denoted by a capitalized Latin name Species: largest group of organisms in which two individuals can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction Cladogram: a branching diagram showing the cladistic relationship between a number of species Classification: the action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics Evolution: the process by which different kinds of living organisms are thought to have developed and diversified from earlier forms during the history of the earth Adaptation: a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment Natural Selection: survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype Phenotype:the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment Genotype: the genetic constitution of an individual organism Competition: the activity or condition of competing to survive in an environment REFLECTION: During this project I felt there were many positives and negatives. Firstly, this project forced you to think outside the box. During this project I feel I contributed a lot with my ideas and helping create our cladogram. This project taught me how to work with classmates who are very independent which forced me to step up and make sure work was being done. During this project I thought I focused at times a lot more than usual and was very engaged in it. I also thought my group and I worked very well together when we were on task. I was very off task at many points during this project. I need to focus on staying in my group and on topic rather than lingering around with my friends in other groups. I also need to work on staying off my phone and putting my full attention on the task being asked. We had a ton of freedom during this project which I felt was good and bad for the class. .
