Background information:
In this project we solved a murder case. Carleton Comet went on a picnic with Nancy Normal, Sam Sophomore, Theresa Terra, Fred Flimmer, and Glen Glee. At 7:35pm, the sky darkened and Carleton Comet was brutally murdered. On the scene, the murder weapon which was a steak knife was bagged and sent to the lab for us to analyze. The murder weapon had hair and two blood types on it. We also found fingerprints and a death note on the scene. We also looked at the family pedigrees and karyotypes of each suspect. You can view all our evidence in the presentation below. In this case we found Nancy Normal guilty of first degree murder because all the evidence pointed at her.
Presentation:
Concepts:
DNA Fingerprinting :is a laboratory technique used to establish a link between biological evidence and a suspect in a criminal investigation
Fingerprint Lifting: is the process of securing copies of fingerprints that are left at a crime scene
Gel Electrophoresis: is a laboratory method used to separate mixtures of DNA, RNA, or proteins according to molecular size
Cross-matching blood: refers to the test that is performed to blood in order to determine the blood type
Karyotyping: is a test to identify and evaluate the size, shape, and number of chromosomes in a sample of body cells. Extra or missing chromosomes, or abnormal positions of chromosome pieces, can cause disorders ad problems within the person.
Molarity: The unit of molarity is expressed in moles per kilogram. The formula for molarity is m = moles of solute / kilograms of solvent.
Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture. Ink has several dyes so we can separate those colors from one another using chromatography to find a match.
Pedigree is the record of descent of an animal, showing it to be purebred cross matching blood
Complete Dominant: A form of dominance where in the dominant allele completely masks the effect of the recessive allele in heterogeneous condition.
First Degree Murder: An unlawful killing that is both willful and premeditated, committed after planning.
Gene: sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and thus determines a trait.
Genotype: genetic makeup of an organism
Phenotype: physical characteristics of an organism
Alleles: one of a number of different forms of a gene
Reflection:
This project was long, but very fun to learn about. I had a ton of ups and downs during this project. First off I loved the project base and mystery idea, I thought it was very interesting. I thought all the different labs we performed during this project were very cool and I learned a ton. This was my favorite project all year and I thought my group and I were very productive most of the time. During this project I thought I focused at times a lot more than usual and was very engaged in it. I also thought my group and I worked very well together when we were on task. I was very off task at many points during this project. I need to focus on staying in my group and on topic rather than lingering around with my friends in other groups. I also need to work on staying off my phone and putting my full attention on the task being asked. We had a ton of freedom during this project which I felt was good and bad for the class. Overall I would do another project like this any day with a different dialogue. I thought everyone in the class benefited greatly from this project and learned a lot.
